Our clients described their vision as wanting a low-maintenance modern garden to reflect the look of their home, with some planting and the use of neutral colours.
While this brief may seem deceptively simple, it would actually require a lot of hard landscaping and clearing of the entire existing garden.
To match our client's vision, we chose materials to reflect that modern feeling, while remaining low maintenance: Porcelain Slabs, Millboard and natural Scottish pebbles placed inside borders. Millboard has a more natural tone that contrasts with the cold and hard look of the porcelain, while the pebbles in the planting borders give the space some gentle texture, making sure that the garden as a whole doesn’t feel one note.
The main feature of the garden is the 'frame' we created by arranging the porcelain slabs around the space. The layout we picked brings a sense of balance to the garden, which mirrors the modern design of our client's home. We also used stone cladding on certain edges and vertical surfaces to give a polished finish and add a bit of depth.
The entire area was also made level, with steps leading down to a gated entrance for easy access. This zoning makes each area feel purposeful while still maintaining a connected feel.
What they ended up with was a modern garden that looks good but is also easy to maintain. By picking different textures and types of materials, the space feels layered and full of depth, but it still stays practical and adaptable, perfect for relaxing in the sun or enjoying a big family barbecue.
The end result of this Frame Garden shows us that when good design and practicality go hand in hand, it can become a natural extension of your home.
